It’s boiling hot here in Korea. How can we beat the heat? Vacation to the beach? Perhaps to a valley? It all sounds great, but how about Korea’s unique traditional method of beating heat? Samgyetang is traditionally served in the summer for its supposed nutrients, which replace those lost through excessive sweating and physical exertion during the midsummer heat in Korea. What about other countries? Let’s have a look at the US and Britain, two major English speaking nations.

The reason for eating Samgyetang during the summer in Korea is because of ancestral beliefs. Our ancestors believed that, even though the body generally becomes heated during hot days, the inner core of the body becomes cool. The core becomes cooler because we tend to eat more cold food to cool off the heat, thus making us weak and even more vulnerable to heat and sweat. Thus, hot food is needed to balance the inner part of our body, and our ancestors believed that meat is the best choice to provide nutrients to gain stamina. Chicken was an easy source of meat, and so they started to eat Samgyetang. The tradition lives on today, with many Koreans eating Samgyetang during the summer.

Now let’s see how they beat the heat in the UK and US. The information was given by native teachers at CUFS.

Actually, British people don’t try to fight the summer heat. Because the weather is so unpredictable, they all go out and make the most of it when the sun comes out. It is so unpredictable that you could go out in the morning wearing shorts and a t-shirt, then need a big coat, scarf, and an umbrella in the afternoon. The British have a reputation in Europe for their love of the sun, and there’s even an expression stating “mad dogs and Englishmen stay out in the midday sun!” Houses don’t have air-conditioning because it’s never needed, but they drink English style black-tea with a little milk believing that it will help fight the heat.

Americans usually enjoy water sports or drink cool beverages to fight away the heat during the summer. Many go to the beach, but a lot of people install pools in their gardens and enjoy the summer at home. Those living in cities enjoy cool refreshments at air conditioned places or have rooftop parties. In many parts of the US, children or teenagers often open fire hydrants and play in the water, but this is illegal and a problem for the cities. One interesting fact is that, shaved ice desserts, influenced by Korean dessert “bingsu”, are being served in the US.

This summer is forecast to be hotter than usual. So, it is best to look after our health during the blistering heat of the summer. Let’s all gain the strength to fight the heat by eating a bowl of Samgyetang and have fun trying different ways to beat the heat!
